Message from the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Reford as the Head of School for City Collegiate Public Charter School. The unanimous choice of the Board, Dr. Reford brings to his new post a unique background that includes outstanding scholarship and highly successful teaching and administrative experience.

Currently Dean at Sidwell Friends School, Dr. Reford has taught English, American and Post-Colonial African literature, served as Director of Student Activities (1998-2005), Assistant Dean of Students, (2001-2005), and Interim Acting Dean of Students (2005-2006) before assuming his present position in 2006. He has coached cross country at Georgetown Day and is known as an excellent disciplinarian with a reputation for fairness.

Prior to coming to Sidwell, Dr.Reford taught English literature and expository writing at The Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY (1996-1997) and Georgetown Day School (1993-1996) in Washington DC. He also served for two years as assistant professor in the English Department of Moscow State University before coming to the US.

A recipient of numerous scholarships and fellowships, Dr. Reford attended Oxford University of 1984-92 where he earned his BA and MA in English literature and wrote his doctorate on the poetry of W. B. Yeats. He has done additional graduate work at The School of Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth College and the Yeats Summer School in Sligo, Ireland.

Over the past two months, the Board of Trustees has conducted a search for the top administrator at City Collegiate involving Board members and parents including the PTA President. Dr. Reford met with the City Collegiate faculty today and will hold informal gatherings with parents and students over the next few weeks. Although he will not assume full-time leadership at City Collegiate until his present contract expires in June 2008, during the next few months he will coordinate program planning and staffing for next year and will be available to work closely with the school staff and Board of Trustees.
